Diane Steverlynck lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.

Since 2003, Diane Steverlynck has been developing a practice centred on the transversal dimension of textiles, which she approaches as a field of experimentation at the heart of material culture. Her work investigates the ways in which the specific properties of materials, as well as the processes through which they are transformed and used, contribute to shaping the form and identity of objects, as well as our experience of them.

Textiles are thus approached as an active medium, opening up multiple processes of materialisation. A flat surface can become spatial, rigidity can give way to flexibility, dispersed elements can draw together, while a pattern can emerge from the repetition of a movement or a tension. Deconstruction, transformation and the versatility of uses are among the dynamics through which she explores the potential of textiles. The forms that emerge from these processes do not respond to a predetermined formal intention; rather, they result from a close attention to materials, to the gestures and principles through which they are produced, and to the stories they carry. Through these interactions, her work brings to light the narrative and sensory dimensions of making practices and of the forms of expression that take shape through them.

Recipient of the Henry Van de Velde Young Talent Award in 2010, Diane Steverlynck is represented by Valerie Traan gallery in Antwerp. Her projects have notably been exhibited at Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch, CID – Centre d’Innovation et de Design at Grand-Hornu, Design Museum Gent, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Bétonsalon – Centre d’Art et de Recherche Bétonsalon in Paris, and TextielMuseum in Tilburg. Her work is also held in the collections of Design Museum Gent and CID – Centre d’Innovation et de Design at Grand-Hornu, Belgium.

Alongside her artistic practice, she has been teaching at the School of Arts & Conservatorium (KASK) in Ghent since 2006.
